I'm not sure. He was in Last of the Mohicans, which would fit in with the classics of American literature motif.
Nah, it was something set in the witch trial days. I think both books are about infidelity, maybe that's why I'm confusing them.
That would be Arthur Miller's The Crucible.

Not to be confused with The Crucible starring Sean Connery, The Crucible starring George C. Scott, or even The Crucible with Sarah Sutton.
