HMS Falcon

His Majestys Sloop Falcon

What We Do

OUr major activity is to provide "Interpretive History" demonstrations at the Castillo de San Marcos and Fort Matanzas National Monuments in St. Augustine, Florida. We portray 18th-century British sailors in "first person" (rather than telling visitors "back then, they would have done things like this", we tell them "this is what we do"). The most popular facet of our interpretations is the firing of the cannons. (We do this, naturally, by the efficient English drill, rather than the extremely convoluted Spanish drill which is usually demonstrated by NPS volunteers at the Castillo; comparisons between the two might very well reveal the reasons why the English navy was such a power to be feared upon the high seas!)

Occasionally, the Falcon spends the weekend at Fort Matanzas, to breathe life into the Torchlight Tours put on by the Park Service. During these weekends, we sleep in the tiny fort, cook and eat authentic meals, stand watch looking for Spanish ships, and wait for Major Ogilvie to arrive with his troops so we can get off this tiny island and back to the Falcon in Antigua!

We also have the honor to lead the annual Grand Illumination Torchlight Parade through the streets of St. Augustine.
